Montreal high-purity metals producer 5N Plus Inc. has taken a two-thirds stake in Utah's Sylarus Technologies LLC, a leading producer of germanium substrates for solar cells, by converting a $3-million (U.S.) debenture into Sylarus shares. Sylarus is a customer of Firebird Technologies, a U.S. subsidiary of 5N Plus that provides high-purity germanium feedstock and recycling for germanium-containing residues. Also, 5N will provide Sylarus with $766,000 in immediate funding and will support its working capital and development expenses as needed.

Umicore has completed construction of its new germanium substrate production facility in Quapaw, OK, USA, adjacent to the firm’s existing site. Construction was started in July 2008.
 The 40,000 square foot facility is now undergoing process start-up and qualification runs. The new substrate facility is on the same campus as the Umicore germanium optics and high-purity chemicals operation for the US market and will be integrated in the existing IS014001, 2004 system during 2010.

Voltaix, LLC, a leading provider of materials that enhance the performance of semiconductor chips and solar cells, plans to open a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Voltaix, LLC will construct the plant at the Portland Industrial Park in Upper Mt. Bethel Township. Plant construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year with operations beginning in 2011.
