Montreal high-purity metals producer 5N Plus Inc. has taken a two-thirds stake in Utah's Sylarus Technologies LLC, a leading producer of germanium substrates for solar cells, by converting a $3-million (U.S.) debenture into Sylarus shares. Sylarus is a customer of Firebird Technologies, a U.S. subsidiary of 5N Plus that provides high-purity germanium feedstock and recycling for germanium-containing residues. Also, 5N will provide Sylarus with $766,000 in immediate funding and will support its working capital and development expenses as needed.
Umicore has completed construction of its new germanium substrate production facility in Quapaw, OK, USA, adjacent to the firm’s existing site. Construction was started in July 2008.
 The 40,000 square foot facility is now undergoing process start-up and qualification runs. The new substrate facility is on the same campus as the Umicore germanium optics and high-purity chemicals operation for the US market and will be integrated in the existing IS014001, 2004 system during 2010.
Voltaix, LLC, a leading provider of materials that enhance the performance of semiconductor chips and solar cells, plans to open a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Voltaix, LLC will construct the plant at the Portland Industrial Park in Upper Mt. Bethel Township. Plant construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year with operations beginning in 2011.

("Firebird") has entered into long-term supply agreements for germanium and indium feedstocks with Teck Metals Ltd. ("Teck")

The first laser built from germanium that can emit wavelengths of light useful for optical communications has been demonstrated by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It's also the first germanium laser to operate at room temperature.
China's southwestern Yunnan Province has started the second round of nonferrous metals stockpiling in a bid to ensure steady growth of the local industry, according to a statement of the provincial government's industry and communications commission. The statement said the reserve plan covers copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, tin, germanium and industrial silicon.

War Eagle Mining Company Inc. announced a new discovery hole at the Tres Marias concession in Mexico. The assay result for this hole is an intercept of 1.35 meters with a grade of 6.97% Zinc and 37 grams per tonne Germanium. The hole is located at La Blanca, which is approximately 600 meters to the south-east of the old mine shaft, but still on the concession.

War Eagle Mining Company Inc. has signed a Letter of Intent with ELCOGAS SA of Spain regarding the testing of fly ash from its Puertollano power plant with the aim of recovering germanium (Ge) and gallium (Ga). The Puertollano Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant is a coal gasification thermal power plant that was supported by the European Union to facilitate clean energy production from coal.
Strategic Resource Acquisition Corporation ("SRA") is ready to restart the work at its Mid-Tennessee zinc mining complex (MTM) after structural rehabilitation and commissioning of equipment. The Company expects to be producing its first concentrate in December. SRA announced that it has entered into an agreement in principle with Nyrstar SA/NV ("Nyrstar"), the world's largest producer of zinc metals and alloys, for the sale of a major portion of its zinc production from the MTM. The concentrate from MTM's facilities in Gordonsville will be processed at Nyrstar's smelter in Clarksville, Tennessee located 100 miles west of the MTM complex.
USA DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS) retained germanium tetrafuoride in the list of their Appenix A to Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards Interim Final Rule, effective from 20 November 2007. Appendix A lists chemicals of interest and screening threshold quantities, or STQs.
